1、移就為Transferred Epithet or llage一詞源於希臘語的hypallassein，hypo意為under，allassein意為change，所以，修飾語移置其實質在於修飾語位置的變化，其變化特點是“張冠李戴”。因此來自於A Dictionary of Literary Term的定義是這樣的：“Also known as transferred epithet.A figure of speech in which the epithet is transferred from the appropriate noun to modify another which it does not really belong.”簡言之，就是把本不屬於乙的修飾語硬從他所屬的甲那兒移給乙。

2、移就大致分為移人於物和移物於人兩種。第一種“移人於物”，例如：Sometimes they threw (him) bits of food，and got scant thanks；sometimes a mischievous pebble，and a shower of stones and abuses.(有時候，人們朝他扔去零碎食物，卻很少聽到任何感謝；有時，人們惡作劇似地扔去塊石子，得到的回報卻是暴風驟雨般的石頭和謾罵。)mischievous本來是用於形容人的“惡作劇的、淘氣的”，在此句中硬來修飾pebble，實際上修飾的是扔石子的人，讓人不禁感到生動、形象。

His stories achieved nothing but cheap laughs.(他的故事僅僅賺得了一點兒廉價的笑聲。)在此句中，用於修飾抽象事物的形容詞cheap被移用來修飾具體的事物laugh(laugh本來是一種具體情感，不能用cheap or expensive來形容)，強有力地諷刺了他的故事的庸俗和低級。
