1、關係代詞that ,which ,who 和whom在定語從句作主語，賓語或表語，也就是説，如果在定語從句中，缺少這些成分的話，就用這些詞。關係代詞whose在定語從句中做定語。關係副詞where ,whenh和why在定語從句中充當狀語。我們知道，定語從句的結構是（先行詞）+關係詞+定語從句。關係詞的選擇主要看定語從句中缺少了什麼成分。

2、如:This is the factory ______his father worked ten years ago.在his father worked ten years ago部分，work是一個不及物動詞，明顯缺少了地點狀語，只能用關係副詞where。

3、再如：The boy _____ name is Tom didn't come to school yesterday.在_____ name is Tom中，缺少了name的定語，所以用關係代詞whose。又如：This is the man ______took my pen yesterday. 在______took my pen yesterday中，明顯缺少了主語，所以用who或that。
